Growing Strong ...

        Our Horticulture program takes a multifaceted approach to developing young people. By combining intensive classroom instruction with hands on experience gained in our greenhouse facility, students acquire a level of proficiency and professionalism that is unmatched by programs of its kind. To better understand our methods you might be interested in a sample of our curriculum, so we are including it here for you. Also of note is our Junior Master Gardener Program.

        Upon completion of our Common Curriculum described earlier students begin to focus their training through course offerings specializing in the horticulture field.

Tool Identification and Use
Classroom: 5 Hours
Laboratory: 50 Hours

        The student is given the opportunity to learn the identification and safe use of various tools associated with the trade. Maintenance of these tools will be covered as well. The student will be expected to demonstrate the safe use and operation of 15 tools.

Measurements
Classroom: 5 Hours
Laboratory: 50 Hours

        This course is designed to make the student proficient in basic measurements associated with the trade.Areas covered include manipulation of fractions as associated with measurements, demonstratingthe use of a rule and taking accurate measurements, dimensions, and applying measurement practices to hands-on activities in the trade.

Plant Identification
Classroom: 5.5 Hours
Laboratory: 22 Hours

        This course offering covers plant classification systems and identification of ornamentals, landscaping plants, and vegetables.

Interior Scaping
Classroom: 22.5 Hours
Laboratory: 60 Hours

        The student will learn various elements of decoration with plants and the appropriate care factors and selection of plants based on setting and light requirements.

Plant Growth and Development
Classroom: 22.5 Hours
Laboratory: 60 Hours

        Students will learn the various functions of plant parts including roots, stem, flower, leaves, and seeds. Other course topics include the photosynthesis process, transpiration process, and respiration of plants.

Horticulture Chemicals
Classroom: 15 Hours
Laboratory: 40 Hours

        This course discusses the vaious types of chemicals used in modern horticulture. Areas covered include the use and safe application of fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, etc.

Plant Propagation
Classroom: 22.5 Hours
Laboratory: 60 Hours

        The student will learn the various methods and practices in plant reproduction.

Nursery Plant Production
Classroom: 22.5 Hours
Laboratory: 60 Hours

        This course offering covers plant selection, care, and maintenance. Emphasis is placed on care in planting, pruning, disease detection, and greenhouse maintenance.

Landscaping Design and Maintenance
Classroom: 15 Hours
Laboratory: 40 Hours

        The student will learn various elements associated with landscaping design including definition of trees, plants, shrubs, plant arrangement, etc.
